Programs & Services
Transitioning from High School
Kent Center's professional staff work very closely with area school systems to plan and develop services for the young adults who will be exiting the public school systems and joining our programs. Although a transitioning student is eligible to enroll with Kent Center at age 18, in Maryland, State program funding normally remains with the school system until an individual attains age 21.
Kent Center's Services
Depending on an individual's capabilities and the degree of services required, adults with developmental disabilities aged 18 or older are eligible for admission into any of the services Kent Center offers.

Day Habilitation Program
Designed for individuals with moderate to severe disabilities, the "Day Program" encourages individuals to work on a variety of skills that can lead to more independent living. Social and recreational skills are emphasized, as well as group participation and interaction with others.
Individuals with moderate disabilities learn pre-vocational skills by performing maintenance tasks and through the fulfillment of piece-work contracts from local businesses. Individuals with severe disabilities are trained in basic self-help skills and activities of daily living.
Supported Employment
Kent Center provides supported employment opportunities through our thrift store, Hidden Treasures, which employs approximately half of the people who receive our services. The shop is completely self-supported through community donations of gently used clothing, furniture and household items. Additionally, teams of individuals have provided office cleaning services for local businesses, and provided professional bulk mailing services for other organizations and businesses.
Individuals who demonstrate capability and express an interest in entering the community workforce, receive additional training and on-the-job coaching from a personal Job Coach. Currently, we have individuals who are competitively employed at Acme grocery store, Fairlee Manor, Heron Point, Kent County Department of Public Works, LaMotte Chemical Company, McDonald's and Washington College.
Residential Program
Kent Center offers a variety of community residential options but we do not offer "group homes." Our philosophy is that more than three unrelated people living in the same house does not necessarily make for a truly happy home. Therefore, only three or fewer individuals live in any of the homes supported by Kent Center. With the exception of a handicapped accessible ramp at some homes, it is difficult to distinguish a Kent Center residence from any typical home in our community.
